Daly on the brain

Apr 27

I was watching the Golf Channel the other day - I can't remember which show - and the hosts were talking about John Daly.  Big John's been on suspension for several months now, so it surprised me that he was a topic of discussion.

Daly recently celebrated his 43rd birthday and the guys on this show were talking about whether or not the fan favorite would ever rejoin the PGA Tour.  Opinions were split on whether that would happen, but I have to believe it will.

The big fella made a surprise appearance at Bill Murray's Caddyshack event over the weekend and he looked pretty darn good.  Rumors had been flying that Daly was serious in his comeback attempts and he clearly looked like he'd been taking things seriously, losing close to 40 pounds.

In addition to the weight loss, Daly has also been working on  his swing with coach Rick Smith.  He's going to play in the Spanish Open this weekend, a good test for the two-time major winner.

I think we all need to root for Big John, regardless of the fact that he's made a lot of REALLY bad decisions over the last few years.  Why?  Because he's so good for the game of golf.

Daly really paved the way for a guy like Boo Weekley.  He brings the common man to the golf course and gives them something to cheer for.  If you've never been to a professional tournament and had the pleasure of following Daly around for 18  holes, it's something you should definitely do.  The fans love him and root for him in a way they don't cheer for anyone else.

John Daly is a good guy, let's just hope he can show the powers that be at the PGA Tour offices that he's a changed man and deserves to be out playing with the best on a regular basis.

In addition to owning Northwest Golf Adventures, I've been writing golf and travel articles since 2000. My main focus has always been golf in the Pacific Northwest, but I've had stories appear in association magazines across the country, several national publications and on radio and television. I'm always looking for great stories to write about!
