Tournament time already?

As a total golf junkie, I'm on just about every mailing and newsletter list in the region.  I get updates from courses I've played a lot, courses I've played a couple of times and even from a courses I've never been to.  Right now, they're all sending out invites to winter golf tournaments.

Last week, with the weather forecast looking good (for me, that means not raining), my dad and I signed up for the Re-Gifter Tournament at Oki's Hawks Prairie facility.  We had such a good time that it reminded me how great it is to get out and place competitive golf again.

Now, not every course in the Northwest will be ideal for this kind of thing.  You need to find events to play at courses that have good drainage.  With a few dry days, those courses can firm up and even give you a little bounce and roll.  I know, it's shocking.

The best thing about playing in tournaments throughout the Winter is that you're getting a jump on everyone in your club who doesn't.  Pounding balls at the range each week can only do so much for your game, it helps to get out on the course to keep your touch up around the greens.  I hate to be cliche' but it all comes down to chipping and putting.

Don't know how to find out about a good tournament in your area?  It's a good bet your favorite courses have email newsletter that you can register for.  I hope you do, and I hope to see you out there playing this Winter.

Golf Writer

In addition to owning Northwest Golf Adventures, I've been writing golf and travel articles since 2000. My main focus has always been golf in the Pacific Northwest, but I've had stories appear in association magazines across the country, several national publications and on radio and television. I'm always looking for great stories to write about!
