More manufacturers are offering long versions of their putters and some sites are even telling you how to convert your favorite putter...
My younger brother and I have always had a great relationship when it comes to golf. We grew up playing golf together and usually have a great time playing. He hits the ball a little longer, but I've always been a better putter.
We recently went out for a round with our dad and I was shocked to see my brother pull a Taylormade belly putter from his bag. Since he's nearly 6'7", this particular putter was about as long as my driver, which made the whole thing that much funnier.
His response to every bit of flak he took was, "it saves my back."
Give me a break, he's only 32-years-old.
It seems like the belly putter has been in the spotlight ever since Adam Scott nearly won The Masters with one. That spotlight has burned brighter since Keegan Bradley's PGA Championship win and the subsequent success of guys like Webb Simpson. You know a club has hit the big time when guys like Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els are trying them.
The golf magazines and websites are stuffed with product reviews for belly putters and tips on making use of them. Today, I even received an email with an article showing you how to convert your standard putter into a belly putter.
For me, it feels like the problem isn't with the arrow, it's with the archer. Belly putters are just another placebo, not a panacea. If you can make a solid stroke with a long putter, there's no reason you can't make a solid stroke with a standard flat stick. It's all about confidence.
I guarantee all these professionals can make those four- and five-foot putts during practice rounds without the long putter.
